Starting to make.

I have frequently done a lot of research about newspapers in general and also in plenty more detail. I have now started to make my newspaper pages and the steps i go through to make this is being recorded on a powerpoint. I am making the actual newspaper on publisher, which unfortunaley is an older one, but it does the job.

I have also started to plan my radio advert, and who i will get to speak on it for me. I am now on my christmas holidays so i will have lots of time to do things now and again. I probably will not be able to do my newspaper pages because i am making it on the school computers, but this wont stop me doing a little more preparation for making it.

I will also have to make my newspaper poster on the school computer as i do not have publisher at home, but after the christmas holidays all of our classes will be devoted to the creation of our year project. Wish me luck!

Making a scan square/QR code.

I did decide a while ago that i was going to make my own original scan code on a website i found which can do it for free. As my newspaper doesn't have its own website i am just going to make it so it links to my blog. It shows on my drawn plans that i am having a QR code on my poster and one of my newspaper pages so that anyone interested in my newspaper can scan.

I have made my own free QR code on this website which is a link to my blog:  http://www.qrstuff.com/

This is a scan of what you have to type in to make a scan square:

All i did next was download that image and save it which was very quick and i now have my own original scan code!

So here is my code which has been saved on my computer that links anyone who scans it with their smartphone straight to my blog as i do not have a website for my newspaper:

Looking at 'i'.

When telling somebody about my newspaper plans, the somebody brought up a similarity between the fairly new newspaper 'i'. It is a British newspaper published by Independent Print - hence the 'i'.  It is almost like the younger brother of The Independent. It is a newspaper which is aimed at an audience of a variety of ages which mine isn't and people with limited time to reader a newspaper.

I have done a lot of analysis on other newspapers which are more similar to what i am aiming to achieve, therefore i wont do much of an analysis on this newspaper - more of a reflection on a newspaper which i read often. I have kept in mind that this is a national newspaper, however, unlike most national newspapers it has a no-celebrity gossip content, like local newspapers.

It costs 20p which widens the audience to buy it, but this is daily. My newspaper (even though only doing two pages!) is going to be tabloid size similarly to 'i' and also, on one page it has small articles from different subjects such as business, politics and sport. The price of the newspaper makes the readership of people who are from diverse backgrounds and able to buy the newspaper often, therefore the newspaper gains a big audience often - this is also how they make money.

In every 'i' issue there is an editorial feature written by the editor in chief of the newspaper. This makes the newspaper seem more friendly and personable and also, the way it is written is much less formal, therefore encouraging the reader to read on. I have chosen that i am not going to do that in my first two pages as there isn't much room and also i wanted to get to the point in the first two pages.

The main purpose of this newspaper is for people who do not have much time to read a newspaper. However, I'm not really marketing my newspaper like this as i feel that my articles would be too long and meaningful (culture and lifestyle articles) to be read in a short amount of time.

http://www.independent.co.uk/i/

The newspaper also bases their pitch on having no celebrity gossip in their pages (please see below!), which i am also doing. I feel like it wouldn't target my educated audience who would have has years of reading about celebrity gossip in the pages of their national newspapers. In local newspapers there are usually no celebrities, and i think that 'i' has taken this and made it national.

I think it was a very brave move launching a newspaper with no celebrity gossip and costs only 20p to buy, however it seems to have worked and i think because it comes from the same company as The Independent they do have something to fall back on.

It was big news when the newspaper was launched because it was such a new and risky concept:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11626362 - This page has a video on it which shows the production of 'i' newspaper and also shows that a national newspaper being 20p is something to write about.

http://www.marketingweek.co.uk/sectors/media/i-newspaper-has-reason-to-celebrate-on-its-first-anniversary/3031304.article - Many people doubted this newspaper, but this article's subject is on what a successful year 'i' has had as it's doubter's eat humble pie.

Why was it doubted? It was low in price, it had no celebrity gossip, it has plenty of educational articles, it was for people who wanted a quick read, it was aiming at an audience of a variety of ages and most of all it was new - an untested new newspaper. The newspaper wanted to tap into the younger audience as well as the older with short and snappy articles on the subject of a vast variety of things.

The banning of an 'i' TV advert

While trying to find the TV advert of 'i' which i have seen many a time, i was reminded of the banning of that TV advert. It was banned due to false advertising about not including any celebrity gossip. It was apparently misleading because the newspaper runs a daily caught and social column. Even though this TV advert was banned, i feel like it did sum up well what the newspaper was about.

I wanted to find the banned advert, but i couldn't find it on the internet, or anywhere. When the word 'banned' is used, you instantly think someone has been insulted or hurt by a comment or it has caused a strongly negative reaction or epidemic. This shows that something being banned could just mean it was misunderstood or mis-told. The media using the word 'banned' is quite ironic - it is very over dramatic, eye-catching and people would want to read it. The word banned, i believe, didn't have to be used to describe the advert.

Banned adverts often get more publicity and have a better effect than controversial ones - the controversial ones can have a negative effect on the newspaper, therefore making people believe that the newspaper has no good intentions, or isnt good.

My newspaper's puzzle.

As it shows on my newspaper drawn plan i am choosing to include one puzzle on the second page. In my focus group, i found out that in order to have a new take on a traditional design, it would be a good idea to have a new take on a traditional puzzle.

My previous research on puzzles shows me that the puzzles depend on the type of audience the newspaper attracts. For example, a tabloid newspaper which features celebrities is more likely have puzzles which are celebrity themed.
On this post: http://oliviasmitha2mediastudies.blogspot.com/2011/11/puzzles.html I put a few websites which showed me where newspapers get their puzzles from, therefore i believe that this is the right route for me to go down when getting my puzzles for my newspaper page.

However, as i am writing this section more recently, i have decided that i want my puzzle to be number based and difficult - this is because my audience is intelligent because they6 are educated and also i want them to spend the most time in my newspaper so they will believe that £1.10 is reasonable enough to spend on a newspaper which takes them a long time to read.

So what type of puzzle takes a long time to do, can be varied in difficulties and is for the intelligent reader? - sudoku!

As sudoku is a type of puzzle which is a logic-based Japanese number placement puzzle. I myself do them frequently on various different levels of difficulty. I was going to make a list of different newspapers which choose to have sudoku in their pages however, the puzzles that newspapers have can change weekly and also, sooo many newspapers have sudoku in them.

History of Sudoku

The recent and extreme popularity of sudoku in British newspapers came in around 2004 under the name 'Su Doku'. When one newspaper published the puzzle, another did it the next day when they saw how popular it had become overnight.

Sudoku doesn't have any copyrighted factors about it as they are just a combination of numbers. This means that i can replicate the order of the numbers for my sudoku puzzle from another, existing puzzle.

I did this sudoku puzzle in my spare time just to see how difficult a difficult sudoku is:

This was really difficult, but it isn't impossible. i mustn't rely on what i think about this puzzle too much as i am not the prime target audience. If i were to put a sudoku puzzle in my newspaper i would have to then put the answer to it in the next issue - this is because in order for the reader of this issue to want to know if they got the puzzle right, they would have to buy the next issue.

I have also looked at the aesthetics of a sudoku puzzle in a newspaper. This is from a national newspaper:

There was a easy sudoku to the left of this one, giving the reader the chance to do a puzzle which suits them - and also because this newspaper has such a wide target audience it needs to cater for most people, therefore put in puzzles of different difficulties.

I researched this because i wanted to see how newspapers of this present time layout their sudoku puzzles. From this scanned page i can see that the solutions to yesterday's puzzle are to the left, therefore it pushes the reader to buy the next issue to find the answers and puzzles.

There is also instructions of what to do which i have written one myself. I will put this next to my puzzle:

"Enter numbers into the blank spaces so that each row, column and 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 to 9."
This is a simple way of saying what i want. i didn't want to write too much because more than likely the reader knows what they are doing, I'm just informing those who surprisingly don't.

This is my first newspaper issue, therefore i do not need to write 'yesterday's solutions' because there was no yesterday. If i were making many issues of this newspaper, i would of course after the first issue put the solutions down.

I would also have to state that this is a 'diffucult' puzzle so the readers no and they aren't caught off guard. I know i could have made a puzzle which made like a competition, where the reader sends their completed puzzle in the post to see if they have got everything right in order to then win a prize, however i felt like my target audience want something quick to read and the purpose of my newspaper is to be a form of quick intellectual information.

Finally, having a sudoku puzzle supports my slogan of culture.

A drawn plan of my newspaper poster.

I have said throughout this planning process that my poster is going to be very traditional-looking as i feel like the public knows what these posters are advertsing, they are identifyable enough and they clearly work. they have been used for many years, therefore it would be a very big risk for me to change the way they look and are presented.

After a lot of reasearch, i now think its about time i plan the layout of my poster eventhough it would still be a very traditional layout. I thought i should just do one so i have something to follow when making it on PhotoShop.

I also said in a recent post that i am going to make my newspaper pages and radio advert before my poster as i feel that these will take the most planning and making. But i thought i would just plan what i am going to do for my poster in order to have myself organised.

So here is my hand-drawn plan of my poster layout:

Looking at my very faint (as i done it in pencil not realising how it would turn out on the scan!) plan of the layout of my newspaper i can see that it is very simple and is traditional of what a newspaper sandwich board poster looks like which was my aim all along with the poster. This is because people know what they look like and what they are advertising and as this design has been used for years it must work. I also think it is bold and eye-catching and people know what the poster is advertising.

I will follow this plan when making my poster which will probably be done when i have finished my radio advert and newspaper pages.

Photos for my newspaper.

I just remembered that i need to take the photos for my newspaper article. To make it clear about what photos i need to collect together, i have decided to make a list of the ones i need:

  • A photo of Johnny Depp which isn't copyrighted, i may have to keep searching on the internet for this as I'm sure I'm not going to bump into him any time soon.
  • A trampoline. It for my newspaper headline article which is quite traditional i have decided that i do not want many photos for this as i wont have enough room.
  • A photo of some art from a local new artist. I want a photo of the art and not the artist as i think that this is something which would hook the reader more. I do art A-level (not that i think my art is to professional standard) which i could take a picture of in order to support my small article about it.
  • The new music band i am writing about needs a photo to support it, so i have decided to create my own small CD cover to support the article. I will do this by photoshop as a CD cover can look like anything which isn't offencive.
  • A picture to support the article of fun days out for the family.
I figured out the amount of photos i need by looking back at my drawn plan layout post: http://oliviasmitha2mediastudies.blogspot.com/2011/11/drawn-plan-of-page-layout.html

This section was written after i had just started to make my newspaper's first page:

Here are the photos which i have taken myself and will use:

For the artist article:

I based what i had written in the article around this painting and the imaginary collection which this painting may have been a part of.

The music article:

Thia photo will be on the second page. I couldnt decide whether or not to have a photo of the artist or their album cover. But i came to the conclusion of what would be more possible to achieve - a music album cover. in order to decide this i looked at a very well known music magazine which has reviews about albums all the time

Johnny Depp film article:

I was a bit concerned as to how i would get a photo for this article as i knew i wouldnt be able to get a photo of Johnny depp myself and also any other photo of him is copyrighted. So instead of getting a photo of him, i chose to get a photo linking to the subject of my article. This gets the reader questioning as to what the article is about if it is also about Johnny Depp. This ffice looks bleak and done - just like the ordinary office.

Family days out article:

I took this a while ago (years ago in fact and found it on my pc) and is taken in a local theme park - therefore if a reader likes the look of this rollercoaster it can be found near them. It is a bright and colourful photo and respresents speed and fun - which would makes families interested.

Order of what I am going to do.

This is a post about just to sum up when i am going to do my poster, radio advert and my newspaper pages. I have been making progress on them all but just to make it clear that i am trying to get my newspaper pages done and my radio advert done before my poster. This is because the radio advert and newspaper pages are going to take longer to produce than the poster, mainly due to the amount of content and the length of the production of them.

Making my newspaper page 1.

Now that i have planned what my layout of my pages are going to be, the colours, size of the page and that im not going to take too much time writing it, i think its about time that i should start actually making the page! I am going to record everything that i do and mistakes and problems that hopefully do not come up.

I couldnt decide whether i should do a quick test run of my newspaper page to really know what i was doing as i havent really made a realistic - looking newspaper before. I will only do the newspaper's front page on this post so i can really get to know what i am doing and to break it up so it isnt so confusing.

I also decided that i would do it like the pros and make it on the good ole' fashioned Microsoft Publisher so i can change the size of the page i want - to the traditional newspaper size like i planned. I understand that this possibly be the oldest publisher version available, however, it is the only one i can use therefore have to make the best of this situation.

I made my newspaper page by looking at my drawn plan layout and all of the plans i have previously done and finalized.
