The Rihanna Presentation

I started to research Rihanna's public position to practice for our full year project and then we would do a presentation about it just before these 6 week holidays. Unfortunatley i didnt get my turn as i was editing a homophobia video (to be posted soon!) As a whole i found it quite interesting researching Rihanna and was shocked to find out how much she was in my life without my choice - and sometimes without her meaning to!

THOSE videos.

At first i thought there was only one video of Riahnna's which was banned, however, with more research i found that there are 2 - showing that she hasnt been put off by the 'bad' publicity. She wants to cause a bit of controversy and that it didnt harm her popularity. Rihanna's videos are shown on TV and the internet mainly - things which are available to anyone.

The first video is 'S&M'.

This one is so far banned in 11 countries, MTV are planning to alter it for day-time play and users of youtube are having to confirm they are 18 before they watch it - and this video is on her website for ALL to see?

The video includes explicit and unchild-friendly images which are definateley not suitable for young kids. And the lyrics are just as explicit:

“Sex in the air, I don’t care, I love the smell of it,” she sings. “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but chains and whips excite me.”
So, even if young kids don't watch the television or go on the internet, they are more than likely to hear it on the radio.

The second video is more recently: 'Man Down'.

This video was shot closer to her home country (Jamaica) and again features very unchild-friendly images. There are shootings, rape and other sights of gang culture. Rihanna herself did comment on the controversy which surrounded this video:

"I'm a 23 year old singer who doesn't have kids. What's up with everybody wanting me to be a parent [to their children]? I'm just a girl, I can only be our voice. We all know it's difficult and embarrassing to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone, especially our parents. The music industry isn't "Parent's 'R Us." We have the freedom to make art; let us! It's your job to make sure your children don't turn out like us. You can't hide your kids from society, or they'll never learn how to adapt. This is the real world!"
Here is the video:

In conclusion, its not like Rihanna has shot these videos or sang these songs with the intention for children not to see or hear them as they are being shown everywhere and anytime. In her quote she expressed that she does want children to see these videos - is it right to show kids the 'real world' or should they be sheltered by their parents?

Rihanna's borrowed interest and The Two-Step Flow concept.

This is a little more about the borrowed interest and two-step flow which is used in Rihanna's job. Rihanna being everywhere in the press causes talk and even more publicity about her. This cycle shows the idea of borrowed interest and the two-step flow idea:

This cycle can continue on forever, and in the case of bad publicity being good publicity whatever it is, it will always be in Rihanna's favor.

Ive also made a video which shows the different places in which Rihanna is in my life even though I'm not particularly a fan. I filmed it on my ipod so its a bit wobbly but i hope you as an audience get the point which i am trying to put across:

Rihanna video from Olivia Smith on Vimeo.

Linking my video to borrowed interest, these products have been bought with the intention to read, listen or watch something else and not just because Rihanna is on the front. Rihanna has borrowed the interest from the magazines, other artists, programmes and films and these artifacts have done the same from her. Both win.

Rihanna's Cosmopolitan magazine cover and spread.

I bought a Cosmopolitan magazine the other day featuring Rihanna on the cover and an article inside. There are a lot of points i can say about this magazine and Rihanna in it:

  • The front cover is in the eye-view of children and women. The sections on the shelf where this magazine is found is where all of the other womans magazines are, so the mag is borrowing interest from other mags.
  • If an audience likes the magazine, they will buy it without the intention of specifically reading about Rihanna. If the audience likes Rihanna, it is very likely that that audience will buy the magazine just because she is on it. This is borrowed interest which works.
  • The front cover photo is more tame compared to the inside spread - probably because kids are going to see it when its on the shelf. The magazine is sealed in a bad so it cannot be looked in when in the shop - this gives the magazine more of a chance to be riskier inside the mag.
  • The magazine is aimed at women over 18, however, there are no lawed constrictions to who can buy it.

Rihanna's website.

Analysing the website, it is very pink with Rihanna's photo the main focus. There are different pages you can look at including; news, video, images, music, personal sign in, live and shop. These selections can make the visitors to the website very involved and entertained.

On the shop tab where you can buy merchandise of hers, there are some very interesting items which are worth talking about. On item i found quite disturbing was a pair of 'booty shorts'. Another item was a hoody.

Also note that at the bottom of the shop page there is a chance to see a video of hers - crossing the audiences - making people who want to shop see the video also.

Would parents really want their children to wear these? The are cheap and available - attractive to young children.

My friend had a t-shirt on the other day with Rihanna's face on it. This is advertising her as a face to me - somebody who saw the t-shirt. This could also be described as the Two-Step Flow. As i have seen the t-shirt, i instantly took a photograph to my blog because i have some interest in her (because i am writing this blog). I took the photo of the t-shirt on my phone, and it is still on there:

Twitter

There are also links to Rihanna's Twitter. Her being on Twitter widens her audience even more. Not only can her fans read or watch her, they can virtually follow her. It also gives the audience a chance to get up-to-date, more reliable information directly from Rihanna herself.

There aren't only links to her Twitter on her website, there are also links to her facebook, MySpace and YouTube. This makes sure her audience know everything that is happening with the star. They feel connected and informed.

Bad publicity is good publicity.

Rihanna is always in the magazines and news papers whether for the right reasons or not. The idea that bad publicity is good publicity means that it is a good thing to be in the papers for anything. Her publicity is everywhere: on the internet, radio, interviews, magazines and newspapers etc.

Going back to the attack she experienced from her then boyfriend Chris Brown created so much press and attention on her that the sales of her album were raised by 31%. Chris Brown went down hill from there by losing contracts and album sales - proving that the public has faith in the press to what is the truth or not.

<iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/MUkylt2Xfok" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>iframe>

This is the video in which was shown on TV worldwide. Its Rihanna interview where she 'tells all' about the incident.

However even though i have noted that the incident with Chris Brown is bad publicity, it still worked greatly in her favour.

Is Rihanna just a part of postmodernism?

As i have been doing these posts and researching greatly Rihanna in the public eye, i can't help but think that Rihanna isn't the only one acting provocatively. It is accepted in the postmodern world. Provocative is part of everyday life in the media and works when gaining more of a public image. So maybe I'm not up-to-date with the way image is used to sell records in the modern day. The public probably like the way celebs use not only their 'talent' but their image to sell themselves, there would be many more complaints if people hated a bit of controversy.

Rihanna targetting her audience? Or vise-versa?

Rihanna's wide audience includes young girls, just under the teenage years. But i have been wondering? Is she targeting her audience with her music and images on purpose to target an audience or are her audience going after her by listening to her music and watching her image?

Does she purposely try to target such a young audience? Is it really her fault that a young audience looks up to her? Why doesn't she change her image to be more appropriate for children?

Her videos portray her as somebody who is involved with gangs, sexually aware and arrogant - however - in contrast she reveals herself in the same videos as strong, independent, talented and fun.

With Rihanna being from an Barbados background, she has a wide ethnic following. She has opening shared her experiences of bullying at school for the lightness of her skin, which audiences could relate to.

But i cant work out whether Rihanna really wants to target an audience of younger children. The photo below shows Rihanna having a photo taken with young children, but to the amazement of the papers, she was wearing an explicit necklace. which definitely wasn't aimed at the children.

However, another side of the argument could be that Rihanna rebels against the media as she is seen as just an object - something which makes music. People may forget that she has a personality and a personal life when all they see is her in magazines and music videos.

Or maybe she wasn't expecting to be greeted by young children on the night this photo was taken?

This is a small slide show which i found on the internet. I don't know who made it, but there are a few interesting points and arguments on it about the profile of Rihanna and her public image.

In conclusion, Rihanna does have a wide audience of male and females, young teenagers to 20s. However, she may not have intended her audience to be this young. She must know that she does have a young following but she doesn't do anything in her work life to change to be more suitable for them. But why should she want to change what she is doing? She hasn't lost much audience, she has probably gained more audience by being ore provocative. If she isn't losing out and is still gaining more of an audience, she wouldn't want to change it. We also mustn'tt forget the pressure she gets from her management etc.

Rihanna and intertextuality.

Intertextuality basically means cross-referencing between two different media genres, and Rihanna does a lot of this!

Even though throughout this first presentation about Rihanna i have mentioned the different media genres Rihanna is involved with, i still want to define where she is in the postmodern media world today. I made a little prezi to generalize everything in just images:

prezi-player">

I have also applied a link to another post i did with a video i created on it. This video shows how Rihanna is present in my life without my intention:

http://oliviasmitha2mediastudies.blogspot.com/2011/07/rihannas-borrowed-interest-and-two-step.html

Is Rihanna just part of postmodernism?

What is postmodernism?

Dictionary definition: any of a number of trends or movements in the arts and literature developing in the 1970s in reaction to or rejection of the dogma, principles, or practices of established modernism, especially a movement in architecture and the decorative arts running counter to the practice and influence of the International Style and encouraging the use of elements from historical vernacular styles and often playful illusion, decoration, and complexity.

Note: some of the definititions contradict eachother on opinions of when and what postmodernism is.

In my opinion postmedernism definatley happened after the industrial revoloution when technology and the way of life started to become more modern and we wanted modernism to happen.

So it makes me wonder: is Rihanna just a part of this modern culture? Is she just conforming to what developments have happened over the years when it comes to tollerence of explicit behaviour?

There are many arguments that i could make to say that Rihanna is just part of postmodernism, but she didnt create it. The way our culture has changed in society when thinking about explicit behaviour of female stars today, could be the cause of changes in the positions of women, feminism, different expectations of life and more acceptance of the explicit and controversial behaviour. If Rihanna's behaviour is linked to feminism, who says that she is doing any wrong? She is expressing what she wants to do with freedom. We have all be effected by postmodernism in some way or another as its the time we live in. It is nessesity sometimes.

Rihanna the 'game-changer'.

This is mainly about what Rihanna looks like. Her hair and fashion are chaning constantly. But why? Some people may say this is self expression or she likes to change her image frequently for herself. However, others may argue that this is because it keeps her audeince on their toes, always wanting to know what she will be doing next and she gains greater collum inches.

She is always unpredictable and people will take the time to find out what she is going to wear next. She isnt the only MAJOR celebrity doing this, so it obviously works for them as a brand. Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry etc are one of the many 'game-changers'.

What is Rihanna?

Instead of asking who she is, as I'm probably sure most of the world knows, i am questioning what she is.

Is she a brand?
She has her own perfume, t-shirts (which advertise her as a singer, not a person), beanie hats with her logo on it, an eye patch? These merchandise are sold on her website and would be sold at her concert performances. Just like Sting, Adele and Beyonce, she only has one name. This makes her easier to remember and makes her seem as if she is the ONLY ONE, the only Rihanna.

Is she a money-maker?
Its not nice to talk about the money people earn but with a world-known act she much be able to afford a lot of entourage. Managers, agents, hair and make-up stylists, publicists etc. These people make her even more famous, therefore she becomes more of a money-maker. Rihanna has sold more than 20 million albums and 60 million singles according to Wikipedia. A money-making machine?

Is she a role-model?
This photos shows Rihanna in one of her more sensible and child-friend outfits. However this game-changer when it comes to clothes often likes to take the risque approach - especially when it comes to performances - which are shown to the public - which include a lot of CHILDREN. This makes me wonder whether she is appropriate enough to be a child's role-model. What do they think when they see her outfits and performances and listen to her on their CD players or the radio? Children may look up to her as a role-model because they innocently like her music and still may not know what her lyrics are suggesting or mean. With her being a role model she gains a greater and wider audience.

Is she a singer?

There is no doubt that this girl can sing, but with every singer/musician this isn't the only factor you have to have. You also need the look, personality and business mind in order to sell records - and obviously she knows how to do that.

Is she a songwriter?
Some people haven't been writing their own songs for decades and Rihanna is no exception. She doesn't write most of her songs, but as she is the person who has to sing these songs for the rest of her working life so she would have to have the final say in whether she likes it or not. Her record company has to make sure that her songs sell, so they have to be good, so therefore her writing skills may not be up to scratch to provide for the demand.

Is she a performer?
Yes. I haven't met one person that has said her performance was bad. I have met people who have said her performance was risque. When she performs she likes to go all the way with her outfits, dancers and entertainment. This makes me wonder, am i taking this whole controversy thing too seriously? Is it just entertainment? However, this is entertainment for little kids.

In the case of this video, she is performing at a awards show with an audience of world-wide children, parents and adults.

Is she a fashion icon?
She is online on fashion magazine websites and fashion blogs. She is in fashion magazines. She goes to fashion events. Girls may copy her fashion style. She socializes in the fashion empire. Designers use her as a 'manakin' to advertise their clothes on her.

Here are a few print screens of websites, the pages are of the search results when i typed in 'Rihanna':

(Left) This is a popular fashion blog and posts have been made about her clothing choices. People (especially teenage girls) would search Rihannas name in particular on this type of website, creating a wider audience for her - one which has an interest in what celebrities wear, and more specifically, what Rihanna wears. This is vogue.co.uk (right) which is a online version on the ongoing, highly popular fashion magazine. I typed in 'Rihanna' and i was given 53 search results - not as many as i was expecting. However her name may still be searched by young girls. (Below, left) this is a print screen of another ongoing fashion magazine - elle.co.uk. Even though there were no pictures of her on the search results, there were plenty of articles about her.  This darker blog (top, right) is a really interesting one to write about. I have to analyse this print screen of a fashion blog by keeping the fact that young girls search her name innocently in mind. The search results featured photos of Rihanna in a provocative way, mainly snapshots of her videos. I was still quite disturbed to know that kids as young as 12 were seeing these photos.

She is definitely a dramatic game-changer when it comes to fashion and she loves to shock. When i write shock, i mean cause controversy. On the British X Factor in 2010, Rihanna performed with a finalised wearing a side-splitted dress. The split in the dress nearly reached her waist. The British press were out-raged and didn't know what she was thinking. Did she wear this to purposely be controversial, did she think it wasn't risque, is it okay to wear this where she comes from. The X Factor performance she did was watched by a third of the British population proving that she has a massive audience which could have been caused by the two-step flow theory. Not all of this audience would have liked her as a performer. She also borrowed interest from the X Factor and Christina Aguilara who was also performing. This hit the British headlines hard.

I also note that Christina's performance was just a risque - described as pornographic.

I have written a lot about the way Rihanna looks. This is because there is more of a chance the audience will see Rihanna before they here her. Seeing her in magazines, TV, online, the cover of her CD etc compared to hearing her CD or the radio. I believe that Rihanna images is a great part of what sells her Cd's and gets her noticed and remembered. Its the main factor of her as a brand which makes her provocative.

Danah Boyd: Apophenia

I was given a link to this blog by a lady who in her spare time writes about subjects which interest her from the media and social world.

"Over the years, i have written numerous posts about social media, social software, social networks and other industry-relevant topics. Colleagues often remark that it is difficult to sift through my personal blog to find relevant material. For that reason, i decided to put together a “best of” to highlight the essays that are most interesting to newcomers interested in social media. Right now, these are just recent essays and blog posts that deal with particular issues in depth. If you think that a particular entry should be listed here, please let me know! Better yet, add it to del.icio.us or to digg – i’m watching these sites to see what entries are particularly popular or useful. "

Here is the website: ://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/

She is opinionated but in an intelligent and open-minded way. This blog is a good read and is informatatvive on issues in modern society.

Timeline of Rihanna.

I decided i would look at Rihanna from the day she became mage-famous (2005) to the present day. I want to do this to see how she has changed throughout the years and see why this might be because - could she have changed because of her success? Age? Popularity?

These photos are from the red carpet and i can analyse them using the approach of semiology:

 2005
This photo shows Rihanna looking very young and friendly by her similing face. Her make-up is very natural suggesting she isnt vain and isnt caring too much about what she looks like. The clothes she is wearing are sexy and skimpy, however are somehow still very young and fun. The clothing is very casual for what looks like a popular magazine event, giving the connotation that she may not have had enough time to get ready for the event, or she isnt knowledgeable of what the event was expecting people to wear. She is looking straight onto the camera and she knows the paparazzi are taking her photograph so it is posed.
2006
She definatley looks very glamourous and put together in this photograph. At this is at an awards ceremony, she knew she was going to have her photo taken and therefore, now that she is even more famous, she will have to make an effort. She is striking the pose over her shoulder as she probably knows that it works for her. She could also be doing this pose to show off the dress she is wearing - very often mega-stars are given high-designer dresses/outfits to wear to advertise that brand. Her face is expression is quite stern and pouty - posed - probably because she knows or thinks that it looks good in photographs. The whole world is to see these photos.
2007
This photo is around the time she released her massive single 'Umbrella', selling around 6.6 million copies worldwide. Her face is very posed and almost 'set' in that expression. She often changes her hair, so she is very unpresictable - therefore people always want know what she is going to do next.
2008
Again, she has changed her style. Unpredictable and keeps us interested. This is a very powerful photograph of her, not only by what she is wearing, but also her posture is strong, sure of herself and confident. her face expression is very relaxed, as if she has gotten used to having her photo taken or she isnt to happy about it being taken. The black make-up, hair and dress could be considered not very classic Hollywood, showing she doesnt conform and likes to do her own thing when it comes to image. This could also be linked to her as a brand - is it her who makes herself the brand? Or the people that manage her?
2009
This photo was taken at the Met Gala Ball, just a few months after she was attacked by then boyfriend Chris Brown. The fashion-face definatley shows in this photograph, with her making a dramatic statement. The huge shoulders and smart, masculine visage shows her as being a strong and powerful woman - is she dressing like this to make a point after she was attacked?
2010
Here she is at another awards ceremony with her powerful edge still present. This couture dress is a show-stopper, creating
2011

First Presentation.

I have to choose an artifact in the media industry and find three or more related products in different media genres. We then present it to the class. This presentation is used as a practice run for the brief we will be doing through the year.

I have decided to look at how the world-popular pop star 'Rihanna' and how she effects us audiences, how she does it and how. I am also going to concentrate mainly on how she sells herself - is it the music which hooks in audiences? The risque lyrics to the music? The clothing and actions which could be seen as controversial.

I will make a series of posts looking at her in the media industry, especially in radio, television, the web and magazines and newspapers.

First of all, i will outline her as a performer and person:

- Formally, her name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty (i will do a post about her name being one word!) and she is an Barbadian R&B recording artist and performer.
- She first came onto the scene in 2005 with her popular song "pon de replay".
- This photo (left) generally shows the kind of clothing she wears on stage when performing.

I'm not choosing to analyse Rihanna to critise her, but i am more trying to understand why she does the things she does in her job. I do not own any of her CD's myself, however if one of her songs was on the radio there is a big chance i would sing along to it. So this makes me think - she manages to reach her music to me eventhough I'm not her biggest fan - the only reason i know about her is through different media genres - television, radio, magazines etc, including the two-step flow concept. Most of the people of my generation know who she is - but they may see her in different ways - either as a entertainer, a sex symbol, a good role model or a bad role model etc.

As i was planning my post for this research task i couldn't help but think i was thinking like a 79-year-old in the 1940s, instead of a young 17-year-old person who likes music, fashion and a little bit of controversy - and even though i like these things, i still think Rihanna can go a little too far. From my rough estimations i would say that her main audience is girls aged 12-30, meaning that young girls are taking in the risque lyrics, suggestive dance moves and skimpy clothing.

Eventhough kids are being exposed to this, she gets away with it - people even celebrate it. Some people may see the lyrics, dance moves and clothing as something which shows a woman being young, independent and comfortable with her sexuality. Do i have double standards? - is Rihanna a good role model or a bad one?

To help me with this whole task i have scanned a drawn mind map about different factors of Rihanna:

There are some things that i must mention when reseaching - Intertextuality
                                                                                         - Borrowed interest
                                                                                         - Audience theory
                                                                                         - The two-step flow concept
                                                                                         - Exibition and distribution processes

Todays lesson : Seminology

In todays lesson we talked and learned about the science of semiotics. The definition of semiotics is "the signs and symbols of communicative behaviour, the analysis of systems of communication, as language, gestures, or clothing" and "a general theory of signs and symbolism, usually divided into the branches of pragmatics, semantics and syntactics".
So basically, in the case of what i am going to do: the analysis of the sign and symbolism which comes from a photo. What a photo could tell us about a person using connotations (the meaning behind a description) and denotation (the literal meaning of that description).

Denotations often lead us onto a connotation: for example, the woman is wearing a diamond necklace, therefore suggesting she is a very wealthy lady who likes to impress.

We did a 2 big sheets in class which one featured photos of an old lady, a youthful girl, a sexy woman and a brightly-haired young girl. With these photos we had to write what we thought about them and words which we associated with these women. To do this we had to be very stereotypical and judgemental, however people need to be put into categories in order to create a target audience and to have an idea of how to target this audience.

There were also some more keys words: context and anchorage: the way that different media language elements combine to help fix meaning. Elements which finalize and certify a meaning. Print based media texts will use anchorage to help readers interpret the photos they used to illustrate their stories or articles. Basically when lots of descriptions all link into one full fixed meaning.

Here i have done my own examples of signs and signifies, denotations, connotation and context and anchorage:

Denotations: Black leather bikini, dark hair, centre frame, smiling, lots of make-up, action-style belt, half-naked, strong and confident persona due to hands of hips and focused eyes, attractive to men, sexy, determined eyes
Connotations: daring, tough personality, vain, keeps fit

This magazine is a international men magazine. This is known without researching as the women is aimed at men through what she is wearing and how she is standing, and we know its an international mag due to the variations of currency near the bar code. This magazine would be sold from one of the top shelves in a newsagents as it wouldn't be in children's eye level and would be next to all of the other men's magazines.

This is David Bowie in the 1960's, some of his earliest years.

Denotations: Smart dress with tie and button-down collar. His hair is swept to one side smartly. Two different coloured eyes. Blank background. White clean shirt. Stylish tie. Young boy. Teenage/early twenties-ish. Center frame. Shiny, clean hair.

Connotations: A lot of the denotations indicate Bowie looking smart which also links to the time the photo was taken. The smart dress makes it look as if he was trying to make an effort and his two different coloured eyes show uniqueness, however, it can only be noticed when looking close. The blank background makes the photo look as if it is a school or work photo - very simple and appropriate. The shirt is very clean and white indicating he may not work in somewhere dirty. However, if the viewer knew that this is David Bowie, the musical legend, they may just think this is a press shot or a school photo of his personally.

I found this photo on the internet which firstly came from a men's magazine.

Denotations: Skimpy clothing - black underwear. The model is blonde, attractive and is wearing diamonds. She has long velvet boots on with pointy heels. She is 'sitting' on a Doberman dog. The dog has a diamond collar. The background is white - contrasting with the black. The dog looks relaxed. The models nails are painted and she is tanned and toned.

Connotations: The skimpy clothing aims the photo towards men, and the black could indicate that she is strong. The diamonds show that she has wealth and likes the better things in life. The velvet boots could be seen as sexy and the pointy heel might be taken as dangerous and sexy again. The model has control and domination over the dog, which could be linked to men wanted the woman to have control and domination of them also. The white background makes our attention go straight towards the model and then the dog. The dog is relaxed and is letting the model have control. The model is tanned, has her nails done, is toned, slim and has make-up on showing that she looks after herself and her looks, and possibly is vain.

This is Hilary Duff who was originally a Disney star and now also is an entrepreneur, author, singer-songwriter and an actress.

Denotations: Funky lilac hat and colourful top, blonde young hair. Fresh-faced with little make-up. Hoop earrings. Eye-contact. Smile. Youthful. Natural. White background. Close-up.

Connotations: A role model for children - 'child
friendly'. Sensible and funky dressing indicating she likes fashion and style, and also likes to look different from other people. With the blonde hair and fresh face, she looks very innocent and clean. Eye-contact shows confidence. Parents wouldn't mind their children to be fans of Duff as she looks sensible and promotes the right things just from this photograph.

This is a 1960s bra advertisement.

Denotations: Four 20-somethings, all have radios. Wearing different coloured bras. Different style of bras Red background. Text fills less than half of the page compared to the photo. Wearing the same white skirts - uniform? All smiling, perfect hair and make-up. Advert aimed at women. A get together, a sociable occasion.

Connotations: They all have radios which links to the moto 'tune in to the colour parade' but also could indicate they are up to date with the latest music, and can afford to have radios each. The red background and different colour bras links again to the moto. The different colour and style of bras could show that each woman has a different personality and style and also it show to the audience that the bra comes in different colours. They are all wearing the same skirts which could show that they all work at the same place - maybe as air hostesses. The smiles show they are happy to wear these bras - showing the audience they will be happy if they buy them. The advert shows that it is a sociable occasion.

Keywords

Signs: Everything that can be seen or heard is a sign. It is a discrete unit of meaning.
Arbitrary: The meaning of many signs.
Negotiated meaning: Meanings of different things such as colour can be different in every country or society. We have agreed what these colours mean accordingly - this is can negotiated meaning.
Language culture: The people who share an understanding of associations.
Cultural agreement: The agreement in which for example, our culture agrees a colour means a certain thing.
Polysemic: When signs have a multiple of different meanings
Achorage: How the combination of elements in a sign work together to fix meaning and interpretation.

We also got handed out these sheets which are an introduction to seminology. I have highlighted some keys points which are mentioned and i am planning to finalise those points later in this post. Here are the sheets:

Here are the notes i took from this sheet:

- Semiotics can be used to understand how media texts make meaning for their audiences.
- The approach of semiotics can be applied to all forms of media texts such as print, documentaries and soap operas.
- All media texts are constructed using a variety of signs. Everything seen or heard is a sign. A sign is a discrete unit of meaning.

I have also decided, just like the sheet, to apply semiotics to some well known printed signs:

 - The sign looks like a tick
- The colour green indicates positivity and nature
-The leaf design also indicates nature
- Overall the sign shows that it is okay to eat this product, and is a positive sign of nature and health
-The colour red indicates danger, anger and the practical use is that it catches the eye of the public
- The word 'stop' is an instruction and an order

In conclusion

Semiotics let us delve further into the photograph instead of making us judge what is on the surface. This can provide us an understanding of why things look the way they do and the effect this has on the audience. The idea of semiotics can help us as audiences deal with media issues such as genre, narrative, representation and ideology. Semitotics show that photos which are simple could mean more than photos that are busy depending on the subject. The approach identifies the active nature of the producing institutions in creating meaning with their media texts. I believe that semiotics do involve stereotyping people a lot, however, this must be done to understand why photos and images look the way they are.

Plans for this week.

This is a list of the thing i need to do this week:

- Look at previous students blogs: Jordan Bezants - animation
                                                    Lydia Earl - documentary
                                                    Tom Palmer and Blaine
                                                    James Wigger - Website
                                                    Sam Webber - short film

- Throughout the year make sure i remember to record useful websites (which i did in my previous blog).
- Look at the media studies blog.
- Look at my last years blog to see if i can include anything onto this blog.
- Find out how to create a website and do some practice/drafts on it which lead onto my final website. Post evidence of these websites to show the process.
- Choose a brief and research it.
- Research and talk about all three of the sub-briefs to then choose two which i will definitely do.
