Timeline of Rihanna.

I decided i would look at Rihanna from the day she became mage-famous (2005) to the present day. I want to do this to see how she has changed throughout the years and see why this might be because - could she have changed because of her success? Age? Popularity?

These photos are from the red carpet and i can analyse them using the approach of semiology:

 2005
This photo shows Rihanna looking very young and friendly by her similing face. Her make-up is very natural suggesting she isnt vain and isnt caring too much about what she looks like. The clothes she is wearing are sexy and skimpy, however are somehow still very young and fun. The clothing is very casual for what looks like a popular magazine event, giving the connotation that she may not have had enough time to get ready for the event, or she isnt knowledgeable of what the event was expecting people to wear. She is looking straight onto the camera and she knows the paparazzi are taking her photograph so it is posed.

2006
She definatley looks very glamourous and put together in this photograph. At this is at an awards ceremony, she knew she was going to have her photo taken and therefore, now that she is even more famous, she will have to make an effort.She is striking the pose over her shoulder as she probably knows that it works for her. She could also be doing this pose to show off the dress she is wearing - very often mega-stars are given high-designer dresses/outfits to wear to advertise that brand. Her face is expression is quite stern and pouty - posed - probably because she knows or thinks that it looks good in photographs. The whole world is to see these photos.

2007
This photo is around the time she released her massive single 'Umbrella', selling around 6.6 million copies worldwide. Her face is very posed and almost 'set' in that expression. She often changes her hair, so she is very unpresictable - therefore people always want know what she is going to do next.

2008
Again, she has changed her style. Unpredictable and keeps us interested. This is a very powerful photograph of her, not only by what she is wearing, but also her posture is strong, sure of herself and confident. her face expression is very relaxed, as if she has gotten used to having her photo taken or she isnt to happy about it being taken. The black make-up, hair and dress could be considered not very classic Hollywood, showing she doesnt conform and likes to do her own thing when it comes to image. This could also be linked to her as a brand - is it her who makes herself the brand? Or the people that manage her?

2009
This photo was taken at the Met Gala Ball, just a few months after she was attacked by then boyfriend Chris Brown. The fashion-face definatley shows in this photograph, with her making a dramatic statement. The huge shoulders and smart, masculine visage shows her as being a strong and powerful woman - is she dressing like this to make a point after she was attacked?
