Changing my newspaper page after focus group questionnaires.

I wrote in a few posts ago that i got feedback saying that the layout of the boxes on my pages was messy. I was also told that i dont need boxes and things need to be lined up to make it look more professional and appropriate for an educated adult. I order to sort this problem out, i have decided to try different ways of altering my pages and then compare them:

Here are the copies that i am going to change. I understand where the comments are coming from as the boxes done line up to eachother and it doesnt look neat and crisp. I have decided that this definatley needs to be changed.

These are what the pages look like once i have lined up all of the boxes. I do see that it is an improvement as it looks more slick and professional. I have had to make the text of the family days out feature a little smaller in order to cater for boxes moving.  I think that i am still going to see what my newspaper pages look like without any boxes to compare them to these ones. I am however going to keep the box surrounding my newspaper's name and slogan as these are important indicators to my target audience.

Here are my newspaper pages without any boxes:

Now that i have removed the boxes, i can see that the text itself doesnt line up, making it look messy and unprofessional like it did before. I do however think it looks better. More easier to look at as boxes arent in the way, especially for my second page. I think i am going to keep the boxes on the front page as they are advertising what is inside my newspaper and i think it makes them stand out more. So the next step is to keep the boxes on the front page, but to keep them lost on the second page and line up the text.

If all goes well with the research from my focus group, then i can keep them like this!

I was also sent an email which had links to certain videos on a website to help me with using Publisher:

It is very good and gives a quick run through of the basics of how to use Publisher to your advantage.

Update.

Just thought id do a small post about what i have been up to lately as i havenbt done a post in a while. I have recently finished my newspaper page, radio advert and poster and have been handing out questionnaires about my projects once people have seen them. With whatever feedback i have been given i have tried to alter my projects in that way, but sometimes that isnt possible due to time constraints (especially with adding sound to my radio advert) and possibilities.

I have now got to start writing my evaluation which will probably be done on a Prezi.

I havent yet taken the photos of these questionnaires but they will be on a post soon.

Questionnaires to focus group about projects.

Just to get some feedback from my target audience about my newspaper, radio advert and poster i want to do some questionnaires. I feel that questionnaires give direct, detailed information (depending on the question) and the person i am asking is more truthful as im not there to influence them. So i have put together a questionnaire for each project, got a photo of people from my focus group and got them to answer my quesationnaire while they are looking at my prints or have just listened to my radio advert.
Here are the photos i took of some people considered in my focus group when they were looking at my first and second newspaper page. I wanted them to look at both of them together so they could see how well they work with eachother. My target audience is 'educated adults', which in more detail means they also have children and probably have a good career. The people i have asked are educated and are adults, but do not have children or a career. Eventhough this was the case id thought id ask them anyway for some feedback.

Here are the photos of the open questionnaires i gave them and they have written on them. I need to keep in mind that eventhough they may critise my prducts, i may not be able to change everything to their opinion due to time and in the real world, cost contraints.

This is the feed back i got from my newspaper pages. I was given advice on a big change which i need to make: the boxes on the second page do not work and i need to line up everything so it looks more professional! I asked my focus group.

These are the questionnaires i put out to my focus group after they had seen my poster. Again, they said that this was a suitable poster to finalise.

These are the questionnaires i gave out about my radio advert to my focus group. They overall thoughts on my radio advert were fine, but there were concerns that i would need backing music. I have decided not to follow this due to time constraints. They did mention frequently that it is very informative.

The next post i do will be about the changes i am going to make to my newspaper page in order for it to look better and less like a GCSE student's work. If i look at the pages in comparison, they need to be better structured in order for a individual of my target market to find it appealling enough to want to read. The main problem is that the boxes do not line up, and also they are too attention-seeking and the viewer looks more at those than the text - the text and boxes need to work together as a pair, instead of one ruling the other.

Completed project and ancillary projects.

I am soo glad that i have finally finished my products that i have spent soo long researching and planning for. I am pleased with the finsihed products but it isn't over yet...

Here is a photo of my finished products:

I have had to print them out on A3 paper so that when i come to asking my focus group about them, they can have a good look. If i were to really put my products in the market, i would make my newspaper A4 size because it therefore makes my newspaper portable and i would keep my newspaper's poster the same size so it would fit into a sandwich board.

My poster, i decided that it would be a good idea to put the date on it so that it matches my newspaper because this poster is controlled by the newsagents, therefore they may forget to take the poster down when the issue isn't out anymore. So, it is just safer to put the date on the bottom, just about the contact details.

With my poster, it was suggested to me that i use a photocopier to make all the text bigger and more spread out on the A3 page. I have decided to do this, only if i have enough time because i don't feel as if it is essential.

Here is my radio advert:

Next step: Do questionnaires of each project and give them to my target audience. Then, start my evaluation!

Changing my headline title one last time.

Hopefully the last time i have to change it... changing it will also make what the article is about less obvious and will sort out my problem of cutting a word up. So here is my changed and final front page:

I then just remembered that i haven't changed the title of my newspaper's headline poster. So, i started to change it and found out that the word 'destroyed' doesn't fit onto my page!!! So to solve this problem, i decided to change the order of the words. I know that i had to keep the same words as the newspaper title so they both related to each other and it is known that they are from the same story. So after experimenting with the different orders of these three words, i came up with my final, about-to-be-printed copy:

As it can be seen, i decided to put the longest  and most trouble-making word in the middle, so that it would look better when i change the size of the two words above and below it - making them bigger. I personally think this looks so much better than what i had previously done, and with then print this version off to show my target audience.

I will have to see how it prints!

Asking about my printed newspaper front page.

I have just finished printing out my finished front page after many attempts to do so. As i didnt make my newspaper page on an A3 or A4 page, it was difficult to printing, making parts get cut off. So i n order to make it work, i had to adjust somethings on it.

This photo shows the amount of times i had to print and adjust my page.

I then asked some educated people (eventhough not adults) to look at my newspaper page to see what they thought. I then gave them a set of questions which they could write freely on about what they thought of my newspaper page.

I wanted to get them to write under the questions i thought up because it would give them free-reign of what they wanted to say, i only make the guidelines of what i wanted them to write about.

Here underneath are the questions i wrote and printed out, and then what the 2 people i asked thought about my newspaper page. The questions i asked were inspired by the questions i need to ask in my evaluation. I purposely wanted my questions to be vague so that the answers i got were stright forward, therefore simpleier to revise.

So here are the scanned pages i got from four people. Two were my peers as i wanted a general opinion from them, and the other two were from my focus group and target audience:

                                                            1st person, focus group:

2nd person, focus group:

3rd person, peer:

4th person, peer:

I was given a little more extra information from this person, advising me to change the title to something better, local and less humourous? I have been told this quite a lot, therefore i believe it is time to change it. Here is the extra info i was given:

I also decided that i should ask an educated adult, to give a final comment on my newspaper page. I asked her to do the same as these other two people did and i have the scanned sheet she filled out here:

I found that my newspaper is good and hooks my target audience - which is wide, also, i do definatley need to change the look of the word 'trampoline' on my front page. It just doesnt work having it split into two sections, so i am planning to make the 'by' smaller, and then the trampoline could then fit on it. So the next thing i do is to change my newspaper's front page headline title - again!

But what to change it to? With a suggestion from one particular individual from my target group, i came up with the title: 'LOCAL FAMILY DESTROYED'. I think that it makes the story local, and tragic/hard-hitting and also, i would not need to change what i have written. I will change this now and put a copy of it on a next post.
